Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens

A few months ago, I was asked to illustrate the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens for a range of giftware. Sunderland Borough Council took over the operation of a privately owned museum in the city centre in 1846, making it the first publicly funded museum in the country outside of London. In 1879, a new purpose-built library, museum, and winter gardens were constructed in the city’s park, designed based on the Crystal Palace.

We decided to illustrate the beautiful Victorian frontage of the museum and bring this historic building to life on various gift items. We are now delighted to see these products on display in their lovely gift shop. If you’re ever in the area, I encourage you to visit their museum and beautiful gardens. Thank you for this great opportunity!
